"בארבעה בספטמבר 1944 ננעלים שערי בית הסוהר מאחורי הנס פאלאדה. הוא הגיע אל קצה גבול יכולתו: אלכוהוליסט, שבר כלי מבחינה גופנית ונפשית כאחד, סופר אשר אינו מסוגל לכתוב מואשם בניסיון לרצוח את אשתו. נתון במצוקה נפשית זו, חשוף כל העת למבטיהם של הסוהרים, הוא כותב את זיכרונותיו על תקופת השלטון הנאצי. הוא מספר על ההלשנות, על הסיכון שנשקף לדמיונו וכישרון היצירה הספרותי שלו, על גורלם של רבים מידידיו ושל חבריו לדרך, ועל הפשרות המענות שכרוכות ב"הגירה פנימה". לצורך הסוואה וחיסכון בנייר, הוא משתמש בקיצורים; התיאורים המסוכנים הופכים למעין "כתב סתרים". בסופו של דבר עולה בידו להבריח את כתב היד המסוכן מתוך בית הסוהר. זיכרונותיו גלויי הלב, הפרובוקטיביים מדי פעם, נחשבו לנעדרים במשך שנים רבות. רק בשנת 2009 ראו אור בגרמניה, בהוצאת Aufbau (המו"ל של כל כתבי פאלאדה בגרמניה), שערכה את הטקסט והוסיפה הערות והסברים המותאמים לקהל הקוראים בן־זמננו"--מן המעטפת האחורית.
