" העולם של אתמול הוא תיאור מרתק ומרגש של תקופה שלמה שחרבה, סגנון ותפיסת חיים שאינם אפשריים עוד. בסגנונו הצח ובהיר המחשבה משחזר צוויג את חיי התרבות של אירופה במחצית הראשונה של המאה העשרים ואת הזעזוע האדיר עם פרוץ מלחמת העולם הראשונה והשנייה. בעטו הנפלא הוא פורש את היריעה הרחבה של אירופה ששקעה ואיננה עוד, וקשת של אישים אשר גילמו את חיי הרוח והתרבות שלה, בהם הרצל, פרויד, תומס מאן, ג´יימס ג´ויס וארטורו טוסקניני. עם עליית הנאצים עבר צוויג לאנגליה, משם לארצות הברית, ולבסוף התיישב בברזיל, עקור משורש. העולם של אתמול הוא משל לטרגדיה של אנשי הרוח היהודים־גרמנים במאה העשרים - טרגדיה של אזרח העולם שנאלץ לחיות כיהודי נודד נצחי. את צוואתו סיים צוויג במילים: "אני מברך את כל ידידי; ולוואי ויזכו הם לראות את עלות השחר אחרי הלילה הארוך. אני שחסר סבלנות הנני ביותר, מקדים ללכת לפניהם." -- מן המעטפת האחורית.
