"בספר זה נטען שהרמב”ם היה משוכנע שתורת ישראל מלמדת שבני אדם כולם נבראו בצלם אלוהים ושאין הבדל ממשי, מהותי ומולד בין ישראל לעמים. טענה זו מנוגדת לתפיסה הדומיננטית ביהדות המסורתית מאז ימי הביניים, ובעיקר מאז תחילת האמנציפציה, שגייסה את הרמב”ם לתמוך בגישות פרטיקולריסטיות. לדעתו של מנחם קלנר, תפיסה זו היא סילוף המציאות, ויש בה ממד טרגי. כמובן, ישנם הבדלים בין ישראל לעמים אבל לטענת קלנר, אליבא דרמב"ם ההבדלים הם ברמה של חוקים, של היסטוריה, של ייעוד, ותו לא ... ספר זה מציע קריאה צמודה מאוד של ההלכה הראשונה, ההלכה האמצעית, וההלכה האחרונה ב'משנה תורה' ... הפרק הפותח את הספר מסביר את האוניברסליזם של הרמב"ם באמצעות ניתוח מאמרי חז"ל שמהם היה יכול הרמב"ם לשאוב את רעיונותיו האוניברסליים. הפרק האחרון מתמודד עם דברי הרמב"ם הסותרים, לכאורה, את העמדה שמייחס לו קלנר לאורך כל הספר. באחרית דבר חורג המחבר מקריאה צמודה של דברי הרמב"ם ומביע את עמדתו של נוכח המציאות של ימינו". -- מן הכריכה האחורית.
