"בשנות חייו האחרונות, כשכבר היה חולה בשחפת, התכתב קפקא עם אישה צ'כית צעירה, מילנה יסנסקה, שתרגמה את יצירותיו הראשונות מגרמנית לצ'כית. ההתכתבות המנומסת בתחילתה היתה לחליפת מכתבים סוערת בין השניים, רומן אהבה במכתבים בין איש ואישה, שכמעט אינם נפגשים זה עם זה והם כמהים למשהו שנבצר מהם להשיגו: אהבה, אושר, ואולי פשוט קרבה והבנה וחום אנושי. מן ההתכתבות הזו נשמרו רק מכתביו של קפקא, שלא נועדו לפירסום - כמובן - כמוהם כרוב הדברים שכתב קפקא, וציווה להשמידם אחרי מותו. בקשתו לא נענתה, כידוע, ולא רק היצירות הספרותיות כי אם גם המכתבים והיומנים שכתב ראו אור בהדרגה, ביניהם המכתבים אל מילנה, שמחזיקים, אולי אף יותר ממכתביו האחרים, פיסות וקרעים מכל אישיותו ועולמו, געגועיו ויסוריו וסיוטיו, ובייחוד את הרצון לחלוק אותם עם זולתו. התרגום הראשון לעברית של 'מכתבים אל מילנה' הוא תרגום ראשון של הנוסח השלם, על פי המהדורה הגרמנית המעודכנת והמתוארכת מחדש". -- מעטפת אחורית.
