" ... לאחר שנשאל שוב ושוב מה עלה בגורלו של דני, החליט סטיבן קינג לברר את הסוגיה הזאת, וכך נולד דוקטור סליפ. כעת, בשנות הארבעים לחייו, דני הוא אדם בודד, שנאבק באלכוהוליזם ומתפרנס מעבודה כסניטר בהוספיס, התחנה האחרונה לחולים סופניים. הוא מכונה “דוקטור סליפ“ משום שהוא גורם לחולים בהוספיס לשקוע בשינה שלווה שממנה הם אינם מתעוררים עוד. דני יודע שיש בתוכו “ניצוץ“: אותו כישרון לדעת מתי מישהו נוטה למות, לקרוא מחשבות ולמצוא חפצים אבודים. כאשר ילדה קטנה בשם אָבְּרָה מתחילה לשלוח לו מסרים באמצעות “ניצוץ“ רב־עוצמה משלה, מתברר לדני שהרוע הצרוף של מלון אוברלוק לא עלה באש. אברה ודני, יחד עם צוות קטן ומוזר, יוצאים למלחמה ב'קשר אמיתי', חבורה של יצורים לא אנושיים, רצחניים, בהנהגתה של אמזונה יפהפייה. במסווה של אזרחים שומרי חוק מסתובבים אנשי 'קשר אמיתי' בכל רחבי ארצות־הברית, רוצחים ילדים בעלי 'ניצוץ' וניזונים מנשמותיהם. ויותר מכול הם רוצים את אברה " -- מן המעטפת האחורית.
