"25 באוגוסט 1971, 3:47 לפנות בוקר. במעמקי תהום ליד כביש סואן בפרוורי ניו יורק מגלה סיור משטרה מכונית מרוסקת. בתוכה נמצאת גופה יחידה, גופתו של שר החוץ הסובייטי. תאונה? בדיקה מדוקדקת מעלה כי שר החוץ נרצח בשני כדורי רובה. מוסקבה סוערת והקרמלין מגיב בהתקפות ובהאשמות נגד ארצות-הברית. "מזימה אימפיאליסטית שפלה!" זועקת העיתונות מוסקבה. הצבא האדום נכנס למצב כוננות. גורמים קיצוניים בצמרת הסובייטית דורשים נקיטת צעדים מרחיקי לכת נגד "חבורת המרצחים החורשת מזימות ארסיות בוושינגטון." המתח הבינלאומי גובר והולך, סכנת מלחמה מרחפת באוויר. רק גילוי הרוצח יכול להציל את העולם מהמשבר החמור ביותר שפקד אותו מאז מלחמת העולם השנייה. באישון לילה מזעיק ראש סוכנות הביון המרכזית של ארצות-הברית את הסוכן הצעיר ג´ף סונדרס: "תמצא מי רצח את שר החוץ. עתידה של ארצות-הברית ושלום העולם תלויים בך. הנשיא מבקש את עזרתך." במסע מטורף בן שבוע ימים ברחבי אמריקה, אוסטריה, גרמניה, צרפת וישראל, מנסה ג´ף סונדרס לפענח את התעלומה בכוחות עצמו. וכשהאמת מתחוורת לו היא כה בלתי צפויה, כה מדהימה, שרק הפתעתו של הקורא עולה על הפתעתו של הסוכן החשאי" -- מן המעטפת האחורית.
