"הרומן מגולל את סיפורם העלום של יהודי לוב בשואה. קורותיה של משפחה יהודית שההיסטוריה מזמנת לה מערבולת של התנסויות אימתניות, החל בכיבוש הגרמני של לוב ב-1941 וכלה בשחרור מחנה הריכוז ברגן-בלזן ב-1945. בני משפחת חג'ג', מהנכבדות בקהילת בנגאזי, נעקרים מאורח חייהם, מעירם האהובה וממולדתם. עם עוד יהודים לובים הם נלקחים ממדבר סהרה, הלוהט, מועברים בספינה למחנה מעצר הררי באיטליה ונשלחים ברכבות אל גרמניה המושלגת, להיכלא ולמות בברגן-בלזן. שלושה מסעות משתרגים פה: מסכת הפורענויות שחווים יהודי לוב, על יחסי העבד והאדון הנטויים בינם, צאצאי היבשת השחורה, ובין בני אירופה, שוביהם האיטלקים והגרמנים; מסע החניכה של גיבורת הרומן סילבנה חג'ג', צעירה משכילה, מבריקה ויפת תואר הכופרת בנורמות הפטריכארכליות של סביבתה; ומסע צלילי בתוך בליל לשונות, שהעיקרית בהן היא הערבית היהודית הלובית. הרומן נע במקצבים משתנים בין יבשות וארצות ומציג בלשון ארצית ופיוטית לסירוגין נרטיב אחר מזה המוכר מייצוגי השואה הרווחים. זוהי שואה של יהודים מארצות ערב, שחזותם כהה ושפתם שמית - יסוד זר אפילו בתוך אותה פלנטה אחרת". -- מעטפת אחורית.
