"השנה היא 1926. מלחמת־העולם הראשונה הסתיימה אבל לא העוני הגדול. כריסטינה, צעירה ששכלה את אחיה במלחמה והתייתמה גם מאביה, מתגוררת בעליית גג עלובה עם אמה החולה. השתיים מתפרנסות בדוחק ממשכורתה הצנועה של כריסטינה, העובדת כ"סייעת דואר" באחד הסניפים הכפריים שבאוסטריה. יום אחד היא מקבלת מברק. כריסטינה מופתעת לגלות בו הזמנה לבלות עם דודתה ובעלה חופשה במלון פאר בשוויצריה. הדוד והדודה כבר שם, מחכים לה! הדודה, שמעולם לא פגשה את כריסטינה, היגרה לארצות־הברית לפני שנים רבות בעקבות רומן שערורייתי שניהלה עם איש עסקים עשיר. היא מיעטה לשמור על קשר עם משפחתה, אבל כעת היא חיה ברווחה ותשמח לשתף בה גם את שארת בשרה הצעירה. נערת הדואר קשת היום אורזת את מיטב בגדיה העלובים וחוצה לראשונה את גבולות ארצה לחופשה חלומית באלפים השוויצריים. על גג העולם היא מבינה לראשונה מה החמיצה, וכיצד המלחמה והעוני גזלו ממנה את עלומיה. כשהחופשה נקטעת באחת, וכריסטינה נאלצת לשוב לחייה הקודמים, שום דבר כבר לא יוכל לחזור ולהיות כפי שהיה"--מן המעטפת האחורית.
