"מבלי כל הכנה מראש, הנוכל המהולל שפריץ פון סתמבור מוצא את עצמו על הגרדום כשלולאה כרוכה סביב צווארו והדלת שנפתחת תחתיו מובילה אותו אל... שירות המדינה? כעת נדרש לבחור את בחירת חייו: להיתלות, או להקים על רגליו מחדש את שירות הדואר המתפורר של אנך-מורפורק. משימתו היא להקים מחדש את סניף הדואר ולהכניס בו חיים, אבל יכול להיות שמדובר במשימה בלתי אפשרית עקב ערמות אדירות של מכתבים שלא נשלחו מזה עשרות שנים ושחונקים כל כוך וכל חלקה טובה בבניין הדואר. גרוע מכך, שפריץ נשבע שהוא שומע את הדואר מדבר אליו. והגרוע מכל, אם הוא ייקח את המשימה, הוא יצטרך להתמודד מול מונופל "העורק הגדול" השולט בתקשורת, אשר בראשו עומד מנהל תאב דם וחסר מוסר לחלוטין. אבל אם המשימה בלתי אפשרית ובלתי ניתנת לביצוע, אז שפריץ הוא האיש הנכון – הוא ימסור את הדואר, ימשיך לנשום, יזכה בנערה, וכמובן, יביא לאנשים את המצרך שלו הם זקוקים יותר מכל: תקווה"--מן המעטפת האחורית.
