"עמליה (מלה, אמילי, איימי), צלמת לשעבר החיה בשנתיים האחרונות בקרב החוזרים-בתשובה בירושלים, ומתפרנסת ממלאכת אריגת טליתות - מסיימת במשך 50 הימים של ספירת העומר, בין פסח לשבועות, אריגה של פרוכת עם צירופים קבליים. בלילות היא כותבת וידוי-דברים "לשם", שהוא הנמען האחרון שנותר לה, לאחר שנשמטו כל אחיזותיה בעולם, ולאחר שהתירה את אירוסיה עם ישעיהו, החוזר-בתשובה ששידכו לה. כשתשלים וידוי-תיקון זה - שהוא הטקסט של הספר - היא מתכוונת להתאחד עם נמענה "השם", בקורבן של התאבדות אירוטית גואלת, כמין שעיר לעזאזל. לפני שנתיים היה דומה שמצאה מנוחה לנפשה בפנימייה-מדרשה של חוזרות בתשובה, שאליה ברחה מעצמה ומעברה ... אולם את עמליה רודפים כל שמותיה וזהויותיה מעברה, ואף היסטוריה השתוקה של הוריה, פליטי השואה ... המארג השברירי של חיי התשובה שלה מתחיל להיקרע ודוחף אותה לתבוע מן האל תשובה לשאלה נוקבת". -- מעטפת אחורית.
