Memoirs of Yosef Meir Markovits, a hasidic Jew, as told to his son-in-law. Chs. 9-11 (pp. 414-545) relate his experiences in the Holocaust. Markovits was born in Makó, Hungary, and worked as a scribe in Budapest in the early 1940s. He was sent to work with a military labor battalion for several months; in fall 1944 was sent on a death march to Austria, and then on a transport to Dachau. From there, he was sent to the Mühldorf labor camp, where he was later liberated. Emphasizes Markovits's efforts to maintain religious practice while in the camp. After the war he discovered that most of his family had survived, as did his fiancée, whom he married in Budapest. Several years later, he and his family emigrated to Israel.
