"שבועות ספורים לפני יציאתו לאור של גיליון המוקדש כולו לסחר בנשים, מגלה מיכאל בלומקוויסט, העורך הראשי של מגזין "מילניום", כי שני התחקירנים שיזמו את כתבת התחקיר המרכזית לגיליון נורו למוות בביתם. בכתבת התחקיר עמדו השניים לחשוף שורה של בכירים בממשל, בחברה ובכלכלה השוודית שהיו מעורבים בסחר בנשים. מיכאל, המעלה בדעתו אנשים שונים שהיו עשויים לבצע את הרצח כדי לסכל את יציאת הכתבה לאור, נדהם ממצאי החקירה הראשונים: על האקדח ששימש את הרוצח נמצאו טביעות אצבעות של ליסבת סלאנדר, אותה האקרית מחשבים מבריקה שסייעה לו בעבר ואף הצילה את חייו. המשטרה משוכנעת, על סמך עברה הפסיכיאטרי והעובדה שהוכרזה כפסולת דין, שליסבת היא אכן הרוצחת, ומייד נפתח מצוד מאסיבי ומתוקשר אחריה. מיכאל שמגלה כי בעצם אינו יודע עליה דבר, הוא היחיד, מסתבר, שמאמין בחפותה. בן־לילה ליסבת מוצאת את עצמה מככבת בכותרות הראשיות של מהדורות החדשות ונרדפת על ידי המשטרה, אבל גם על ידי גורמים נוספים. עד מהרה היא מבינה שאם ברצונה להישאר בחיים, עליה להתמודד אחת ולתמיד עם עניינים פתוחים ואפלים מעברה; והיא אכן עושה זאת, על פי אמות מידה מוסריות שרק היא יכולה לנסח ובסגנונה חסר הפשרות"--מן המעטפת האחורית.
