הספר מציג מחקר מקיף הבוחן את שורשי תופעת התיירות בארץ, בהיות התיירות לאחד הגורמים החשובים בקידומה של הארץ אל המודרניזציה ובתהליך ההתמערבות שחל בה. החיבור בוחן את התיירות בארץ-ישראל בתקופת השלטון הבריטי (1948-1917), בה נפתחה הארץ לרעיונות ולהשפעו מודרניות ומערביות חזקות ולהופעת גורמי משיכה חדשים. בתקופת המנדט הפכה הארץ להיות לא רק ארץ הקודש, שמשכה אליה במשך דורות רבים בעיקר עולי רגל וצליינים, אלא גם ארץ מושכת לתיירות מודרנית שאינה בהכרח דתית. במרכז הספר דיון במאפייני התנועה התיירותית לארץ-ישראל על רקע התפתחות אמצעי התחבורה והמדיניות הבריטית ביחס לתיירים באותן שנים, נדונים בו הופעתם של רעיונות וגורמי משיכה חדשים בחייה של הארץ ובהם צמיחת ענף הירידים והאירועים העונתיים, פיתוח קו החוף והופעת תיירות הקייט, התפתחות תיירות המרפא וצמיחת ענף הארחה במשקים החקלאיים. הפסר מציג באופן מפורט את מאפייני התפתחות התיירות בעיר ירושלים ובו מוצגים התהליכים שאירעו במקומות הקדושים, צמיחתם של גורמי משיכה חדשים ברחבי העיר ובהם מרכזי תרבות כבניין ימק"א או מוזאון רוקפלר לארכאולוגיה, התפתחות תשתית שירותי התיירות בעיקר והופעתם של ספקי המידע לתייר, ובהם בעיקר ספרי הדרכה ופרסום תיירותי
