המקרא מציג את דוד כלוחם וכובש, מאהב ומשורר ואת שלמה כבנאי גדול, החכם והעשיר שבמלכים. דימויים אלו הפכו את מייסדי השושלת בירושלים לסמלים הבולטים ביותר של מלכות צדק בתרבות המערב. הגילויים הארכיאולוגיים של השנים האחרונות מערערים את הדימויים האלה. אנו יודעים עתה כי דוד ושלמה ההיסטוריים שלטו מיישוב הררי קטן ודל בירושלים על טריטוריה מצומצמת ודלילת אוכלוסייה בסביבתה המיידית של בירתם. חלק ניכר מסיפור ממלכת הזהר הגדולה של דוד ושלמה התפתח מאות שנים אחרי ימי שלטונם. התיאורים משקפים את צרכיהם של חוגי המלוכה בירושלים המאה וחמישים השנים האחרונות של ימי ממלכת יהודה, בימים הסוערים שבהם נאבקה על הישרדותה מול אימפריות עולם מאיימות. בדוד ושלמה מתארים ישראל פינקלשטיין וניל אשר סילברמן את מקורותיו ההיסטוריים של המיתוס, את שלבי התפתחותו ואת מטרותיהם של מחבריו: מי היו דוד ושלמה ההיסטוריים, על פי הממצאים הארכיאולוגיים, וכיצד הפך המיתוס שיצרה אליטה פרובינציאלית קטנה לנכס צאן ברזל של התרבות היהודית והנוצרית.
