ביקורת יסודית על המחשבה האידיאליסטית, מאפלטון ועד מרקס, המנוגדת לקיומה של חברה דמוקרטית ופתוחה. ספרו המרכזי של קרל פופר בתחום הפילוסופיה המדינית, החברה הפתוחה ואויביה, הוא אחד מספרי ההגות הידועים במאה העשרים. מאז הוצאתו הכירו בו חשובי הפילוסופים כקלאסיקה בתחומו. בספר מנתח פופר ניתוח מקורי את אפלטון, הגל ומרקס, וחושף את חולשתה הפילוסופית של יומרתם לידע על חוקי ההיסטוריה. כך הציב פופר טיעון רב-עוצמה כנגד הטוטליטריות האידיאליסטית, על גילוייה הפשיסטיים והקומוניסטיים. הספר הוא אחד מכתבי ההגנה העיקריים על הדמוקרטיה, ובזכות סגנונו הבהיר והמלומד הוא ממשיך לעורר עניין רב בעולם כולו. למרות רוחב היריעה ועומקה, כתיבתו של פופר בהחלט אינה מיועדת לפילוסופים מקצועיים בלבד, והקורא המשכיל ימצא בה עניין רב. את הספר ערך פרופ' יוסף אגסי שהוא פרופסור אמריטוס באוניברסיטת תל אביב ובאוניברסיטת יורק שבטורונטו.
