'קפיטליזם וחירות' הוא ספרו הידוע ביותר של מילטון פרידמן, שאפשר שהוא הכלכלן המשפיע ביותר בעולם במחצית השנייה של המאה העשרים. בספר זה מציג פרידמן את השקפת העולם שלו בנוגע לתפקיד שצריך למלא הקפיטליזם התחרותי - ארגון הפעילות הכלכלית באמצעות יזמה פרטית הפועלת בשוק חופשי - לא רק כאמצעי להשגת חירות כלכלית, אלא כתנאי הכרחי לחירות פוליטית. הוא דן בעקרונות החברה הליברלית ואחר כך מיישם את העקרונות האלה על הבעיות הדוחקות של זמננו, כגון אפליה, חינוך, חלוקת ההכנסות, רווחה ועוני. את כל זאת מצליח פרידמן להבהיר מבלי להזדקק לשפה טכנית, ובסגנון בהיר ומובן, שאינו מוגבל רק לשימושם של כלכלנים מומחים. תורתו של פרידמן נהנתה מהשפעה יוצאת דופן בהיקפה: דור שלם של כלכלנים החל לתמוך בכלכלת שוק חופשי מאז יצא הספר לאור בשנת 1962, וממשלות רבות זנחו את הכלכלה המתוכננת והחלו להפעיל כלכלת שוק. ספר זה הוא המקור הטוב ביותר להבנת תורה זו.
