La nuit de cristal

Enlarge text Shrink text

An account of the "Kristallnacht" pogrom based on previously unknown documentation from German and other archives. Criticizes the use of the term "Kristallnacht" which minimizes the brutality of the attack on the Jews. Notes that 1938 marked an escalation in anti-Jewish measures, from attacks on individuals to general persecution, confiscation of property, and withdrawal of legal protection from Jewish cultural centers. Describes the brutal expulsion of Jews from Germany on 28 October 1938 and the assassination of Ernst vom Rath which served as the pretext for the pogrom on 9-10 November 1938. Although foreign states condemned the pogrom, they proposed no action to help expelled Jews.
