מרגרייב, היא עיירה קטנה ובלתי נחשבת בג'ורג'יה. השעה העמוסה ביותר ביום שם, היא השעה בה יוצאים הילדים מבית הספר. אבל, בכל זאת, משהו משונה מתרחש במרגרייב. משהו מוזר קורה שם. העיירה הקטנה פשוט - מושלמת. כל כך מושלמת שזה מפחיד. כרי הדשא הם כמו קטיפה, העצים נראים כאילו עברו טיפול קוסמטי - מהמספרה הוותיקה ועד הדיינר של אינו, העיירה פורחת ועסקים משגשגים, בלי אף לקוח אחד. כשמגיע לעיירה ג'ק ריצ'ר, שוטר צבאי לשעבר ונווד בהווה, הוא מתכנן לעזוב כעבור יומיים, אבל בדיוק אז מתרחש במרגרייב הרצח הראשן בעיירה מזה שלושים שנה. כזר היחיד במקום, ריצ'ר הוא החשוד המיידי וההגיוני... וכך מתחיל הסיוט שלו. בשעה שהסודות האיומים מתחילים לדלוף והקנוניה הקטלנית נחשפת, מתחילות גם הגופות להיערם, והמוות הופך למגיפה. ג'ק ריצ'ר שייך לגיבורים מהסוג הישן. הוא קשוח ומחוספס, אבל ישר ואנושי. הוא מנסה להתפתל בדרכים הצדדיות של החיים, אבל האירועים רודפים אחריו ומכריחים אותו להיות חלק מהם. - כריכה אחורית
