"ג'ו קמפבל ... מואשם באונס. לכאורה נראה שמדובר באשמת שווא ... קמפבל שוכר לעצמו עורך-דין מפורסם אך שנוי במחלוקת ... שזקוק בדחיפות למשפט תקשורתי כדי להזרים דם חדש בקריירה שלו, לאחר כמה כשלונות בבית-המשפט. רינגל, אלמן ואב לבת שבע-עשרה, ידוע כעורך דין ממולח, שמגן על נאשמים בעיתיים במיוחד, מתייחס לכל משפט ומשפט כאל בעיה אתית ומפליא למצוא פתרונות קבילים על שופטים, מושבעים ולשכת עורכי-הדין, גם במקרים שנראים לכאורה בלתי-אפשריים. הצוות הנאמן של רינגל, שמורכב מג'סטין, עורך דין צעיר ושאפתן ומרנדי - חוקת וירטואוזית שבמקרה היאע גם המאהבת של ריגל - לא משאיר דבר ליד המקרה. החקירה שהם מנהלים על הלקוח שלהם, קמפבל, מביאה תוצאות מפתיעות. מתברר להם שהפגישה שלו עם הטוענת לאונס ... לא היתה מקרית ... וכי הלקוח שלהם לא היה כן לחלוטין איתם, בלשון המעטה. רינגל מתעקש להאמין ללקוח שלו, גם לאחר שתפס אותו בשקר, ומכופף את חוקי האתיקה המשפטית על כדי שבירה כדי לא לפסול את עצמו מלהגן על קמפבל. רינגל מוכן לעשות הכל בשביל הלקוח שלו, עד שלזוועתו מתברר לו שהוא עשה עסקה עם השטן, ושהוא עלול לאבד בעסקה הזאת את היקר לו מכל"--מן המעטפת האחורית.
