"הבלש אליג´ה ביילי, בן כדור הארץ, יוצא שוב לפעולה. שלוש שנים עברו מאז פענח את תעלומת מותו של חללאי בכדור הארץ. שנתיים, מאז יישב את פרשת רציחתו של חללאי בסולריה. ועתה מזעיקים אותו לגדול ולחשוב שבעולמות החללאים, לעולם השחר אורורה, שם פקד גורל מוזר מאין כמוהו את אחד הרובוטים המופלאים ביותר שבנמצא בכל העולמות – ר´ ג´אנדר פאנל. גם הפעם נלווה אל ביילי שותפו הותיק והמסור, ר´ דאניל אוליבאו ועמו עוד רובוט, רב תושיה גם הוא- ר´ ג´יסקארד רבנטלוב. גם הפעם, כל הסיכויים נגדו. הוא נאלץ לצאת ממערות הפלדה החמימות של כדור הארץ, לחשוף את עצמו לחשדותיהם ולדעותיהם הקדומות של בני החלל – ולא רק גורלו שלו מוטל על כף המאזניים, אלא עתיד כדור הארץ כולו, ואולי גם גורל האנושות. אם יצליח לפתור את התעלומה, יהיו בני האדם רשאים לצאת לגלאקסיה, להתנחל בה ולהקים בסופו של דבר אימפריה גלאקטית. אם ייכשל, צפויה האנושות כולה לניוון ולשקיעה"--מן הכריכה האחורית.
