The Third Gathering of the Global Forum of the National Library of Israel will take place in Jerusalem on 17-19 March, 2019, focusing on "Migration-Borders-Identity". Discussions will address universal cultural, socio-political and philosophical issues, as well as their specific Jewish, Israeli and Zionist dimensions.
Sessions include:
• "Immigration and Justice" with Global Forum Chair Moshe Halbertal, scholar and co-author of the Israel Defense Forces code of ethics; leading immigration expert Christian Joppke; renowned legal and political philosopher Jeremy Waldron; and veteran Israeli legal expert Ruth Gavison
• "Migration – A Situation Report" with World Bank Group Lead Economist Dilip Ratha, and other senior policy experts
• "Migrations and Cultural Identity" with Mark Lilla, Joseph Weiler, Majid Al-Haj, and leading scholars
• "The Geopolitical Implications of Migration" with journalists Thomas Friedman and Mustafa Akyol; scholar Diana Pinto; senior economist Barry R. Chiswick; and former Israeli government minister Yuli Tamir
• "Authors and Poets Talk about Migration" with Jamaica Kincaid, Eli Amir, Eva Hoffman, Agi Mishol
• "The Migration Dilemma in the Elected Official's Eyes" with Aryeh Eldad and Dov Khenin
• "The Jewish People - Migration, Exile and the Return to Zion" with Jonathan Sarna and leading Israeli and American scholars
The Global Forum is a central element of the National Library of Israel's transformative renewal, as it opens access to its treasures as never before while positioning itself as a leading and vibrant cultural institution. Every two years, the Forum gathers together in Jerusalem some 80 prominent figures from Israel and across the world. It serves as a singular platform for contemporary discussions inspired by the Jewish, Israeli and universal intellectual traditions embodied by the National Library's collections, values, and vision. The Chairman of the Global Forum is renowned scholar Prof. Moshe Halbertal. Nobel Prize laureate Shimon Peres served as the Global Forum's founding honorary chairman.
