Yaakov Shaul Elyashar (b. Safed 1817 – d. Jerusalem 1906) was a member of the Rabbinical Court, and later the "Rishon LeZion", the Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem. His personal archive was deposited with the National Library of Israel in three installments: a acquisition made in 1937, another from the heirs of Shai Agnon in 1981, and in a third in 1992. The archive includes letters to and from Rabbi Elyashar on public and private matters, from various individuals and institutions, as well as excerpts from handwritten correspondence between Elyashar and others, court matters, proclamations, financial issues, and more.

יעקב שאול אלישר נולד בצפת בתקע"ז, 1817 לרב יעקב אלישר, חברו של החיד"א. ב-1823 עלה עם משפחתו לירושלים וב-1828 נעשה תלמידו של הרב בנימין מרדכי נבון, שהיה גם אביו החורג. הוסמך ב-1853 לדיינות והוראה וב-1855 שימש כשד"ר ירושלים לאלכסנדריה. ב-1869 נעשה אב"ד ירושלים וב-1893 נעשה "הראשון לציון". היה מכובד על כל עדות ישראל וניסה לאחד את מוסדותיהן, וכן כתב ספרי דרשות ופיוטים רבים. נפטר בירושלים בשנת תרס"ו, 1906. |
