הישוב הארץ ישראלי מוכרח לירות חץ אל תוך הערפל, עליו להיאחז בכל סיכוי, ולו הקלוש ביותר, להצלת יהודים מהשמדה". כך אמר גזבר הסוכנות היהודית אליעזר קפלן בשובו מביקור בטורקיה, זמן לא רק אחר שהתבררה לכול אימת ההשמדה השיטתית של יהודי אירופה. הספר חץ בערפל משחזר ומנתח את תוכניות הסיוע וההצלה שהישוב היהודי בארץ ישראל והנהגתו היו מעורבים בהן. הוא בוחן של מקומו של המפעל הזה בסדר היום הכולל של היישוב והנהגתו באותו זמן. השאלה עד כמה בן גוריון וחבריו אכן אימצו את מסקנתו של קפלן נדונה באמצעות עיון בתיעוד ראשוני עשיר מארכיונים רבים בארץ ובעולם. המחקר מתמקד במערכת ההפעלה המודיעינית החשאית שעמדה לרשות ההנהגה הארץ ישראל בנסיונותיה להציל יהודים באירופה. הוא מסתיים בנסיון לתור אחר יסודותיו של סטריאוטיפ שלילי מושרש היטב בדבר חלקם של היישוב הארץ ישראלי והנהגתו בהצלת יהודי אירופה בזמן השואה. -- כריכה אחרות ; Analyzes plans made and missions carried out during the Holocaust by the Yishuv in Eretz-Israel, which included attempts to extricate Jews from Nazi-occupied territories or to help them survive the war in those territories. Discusses the secret collaboration of the Yishuv with the Allies in some of these efforts, e.g. the parachutists' mission. Describes financial transactions with Nazis through the Yishuv, such as that of Joel Brand, and reveals that the couriers involved were actually Nazi intelligence agents. States that the clandestine rescue activities were carried out by voluntary organizations in the Yishuv, which was then under British rule and in conflict with the local Arab population; although many attempts were made by Yishuv leaders to help European Jewry, most of them failed due to a lack of political and operational experience. Claims that criticism of Yishuv leaders, and especially of David Ben-Gurion, for not doing enough to help European Jews is unfounded.
