Describes Islamic persecution in the 12th century, which resulted in the destruction of the Jewish communities. Under Ottoman rule from the 16th century, the Jews were relegated to dhimma status (including second-class citizenship and special clothing and taxes) until the reforms of the 19th century. Under colonial rule - Italian in Libya from 1911 and French in Tunisia from 1881 - there were limitations on Jewish autonomy, some of them remnants from Muslim rule. During the Holocaust many Libyan Jews were sent to Italian concentration camps and liberated by the British in early 1943. The German occupation of Tunisia (November 1942-May 1943) was short-lived, but many Tunisian Jews in France perished in the Holocaust. Pp. 29-204 contain entries for the Jewish communities of Libya; pp. 205-491 for those of Tunisia. -- From the Bibliography of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism. ; Volume 10 presents 117 entries on Jewish communities in Greece, from ca. 300 to the present. Includes a historical introduction (pp. 1-47), an English summary of the introduction (pp. ix-xvii), and an appendix to the historical introduction dedicated to the Jewish community of Albania (pp. 413-423). Each entry contains information concerning political, social, and intellectual history, including expulsions, pogroms, and anti-Jewish legislation, but focuses in particular on the Holocaust period. -- From the Bibliography of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism.
