Presents the complete "Chronicles" of the Łódź ghetto, which were recorded by workers in the Department of Archives from January 1941 until July 1944, after which the ghetto was liquidated and most of the residents were deported to Auschwitz. The entries report on daily life in the ghetto, e.g. the number of births and deaths, crimes committed, conditions of food and fuel supplies, complaints by residents, orders given by German authorities, and attempts made by individuals and groups to improve the difficult living conditions. Covers the activities of the Judenrat and its chairman, Chaim Mordechai Rumkowski. Records increasing numbers of deaths over the months due to hunger and cold, and many incidents of resettlement "into and out of the ghetto". The language used by the archivists is guarded (e.g. there is no criticism of German policy) because, although the "Chronicle" was secret, the writers were aware that their secret could be discovered at any time. Includes photographs found in the archives. Vol. 1 contains a translation of Lucjan Dobroszycki's introduction to the abridged English edition of the chronicles (1984) and a new introduction by Yisrael Gutman.
