Berthe Reeman (Lys Jamal) was born on November 2, 1932, in Alexandria, Egypt, to a Jewish family. Her father, Fishl Alpert, was a musician who emigrated from Austria. Both, Berthe and her older sister, Helena (Lyn, born in 1930) received musical education and ballet classes. Their talent as belly dancers brought them to the stages of the Cairo nightclubs, where they gained a great deal of success in early age. They were known as "The Jamal Twins", "The Jamal Sisters" or: "Lyn and Lys". During the late 1940s and 1950s they starred in many Egyptian films and toured all over the Far East. In 1958, after a successful tour in India, receiving a message they are wanted by the Egyptian police, they immigrated with their mother, Jeanine Alpert, to USA. During the early 1960s, they stopped gradually their public performances and concentrated in teaching Belly dancing and choreography. Lyn died in Long Island, New York, in 1992. Her sister, Berthe-Lys Reeman died in 2016 in Sherman, Connecticut. |
